Teeter Totter Two, a finished quilt

Friends, I am so pleased with how this turned out! My latest Teeter Totter quilt exudes a happy energy with a confetti of bright colors on bright, solid white. It looks positively resplendent in Keukenhof’s lush, colorful gardens! This was fun to sew and to photograph.

Hello, Teeter Totter! This pattern got its name when I photographed the first, ombre version at a playground. A teeter totter is another word for a seesaw. The patchwork feels so playful to me, with triangles flying up and down and every-which-way.

Opting for a consistent background definitely emphasizes the triangles. The upcoming pattern, due to release on Friday, will include instructions for both versions: ombre background or consistent background. I haven’t quite decided which route I’ll go with the background for my third version during the sew-along. I do so like them both!

The triangles for this Teeter Totter quilt are sewn from 17 different printed fabrics, plus an array of solids. If you’d like to make something similar during the May sew-along, a solid charm pack (5” squares) is perfect for the triangles! Once you set the tone with bright, happy solids, the prints could easily come from your stash or scraps.

I don’t often use prized fabrics for quilt backings, but this time I made an exception. I used a generous cut of the Heather Ross princess print from her 20th anniversary collection as the anchor print on the back! The colors were just perfect for the quilt, and the princesses do look so lovely. The binding is scrappy, but features much of the same ideal rainbow striped fabric with which I bound my last quilt.

So, here is the full quilt backing! For color, I followed the lead of the princess fabric. I arranged the different backing elements loosely with the idea of sunshine over water. Ironic then that the quilt was literally photographed in rain over water, as you can see in the shot below. Ha!

Teeter Totter Two is listed today in my Handmades shop. I hope she brings sunshine into someone’s home, even on rainy days. xoxo
