mama needs a new purse

Trimmed Tote5sm.jpg

I’m a low maintenance girl when it comes to accessories.

Well, that’s a nice way of putting it. The truth is I will wear the same shoes or the same purse forever, far past its presentable days. I just don’t like to bother replacing them!

Way back in 2014 I made this tote as part of Color Intensive. I’ve worn it almost constantly since then and repaired it a few times. I love the shape. It’s not bulky, but it holds extras when I need them.

I’m going to return to the same basic pattern (my own), but switch up the look. Because, why not? It’s probably time for a different look? Wink.

At the moment I’m between quilts. Of course, that hardly ever happens! Best to make something with fabric on hand so that I can run with this sense of inspiration.

I found a large, leftover scrap of melton wool from The Confident Stitch. It’s a thick, coat-weight wool that should hold it’s shape well as a tote. I still think I’ll add batting though, when I quilt the exterior.

The gray-blue melton wool will be an interesting shade for the background. Do you like my color palette? I’m hoping this blue-green-neutral mix will suit winter and summer wardrobes alike.

Because, now you know, I use the same purse all. the. time.

I’m thinking hexagon appliqué, a là Modern Handcraft!

I’ve created these 1” hexagons by pressing 2 3/4” squares around paper shapes. I remove the hexagon paper after it cools and press again to set. No glue, no thread. Later these hexagons will be basted to the wool background and machine appliquéd with straight lines. It’s a quick way to enjoy a little EPP-ish hexagon cuteness!

Supplies. Stitched in Color.jpg

Luckily, I have all the supplies on hand. Some Essex linen will serve as lining fabric. That lovely olive branch print will be the inside pocket. I have fusible fleece to give the lining oomph and magnetic snaps for easy closure. I even had those golden-brown leather straps tucked away in my notions. Love it when that I can make things happen with what I already have!

Maybe, who knows? Mama will have a new purse by the end of the week.
