Efflorescent, a finished quilt
Efflorescent, a finished quilt

I wanted this quilt to feel like a cuddly hug from me, from across the ocean, to my dear friend, Liz. So, I pulled out all the stops to make it extra cozy. I’ve used wool batting, a flannel backing courtesy of The Confident Stitch and open, curvy Baptist Fan quilting.

Each After the Rain block has two elements: the dark and the light. This week, we turn toward the lighter element, the upward-pushing triangles. Those are the never-giving-up, always hopeful, always growing triangles. We say “no” to create space for their growth and light.

Penny Bird pillow
Penny Bird pillow

Tada! The finished pillow! It’s about 20” square and quite thick. The Penny Bird block gives it so much personality. I’m also really happy with the baptist fan quilting. It lends a sense of light movement to the patchwork which makes you believe she’s only just landed.

Today I’ve chosen fabrics for a new project - a big pillow for Aria’s bed. The solid teal background is for the bird block. I’ll frame it log-cabin style for the pillow front so that the bird seems poised to take flight.
