After the Rain Sew-Along

Ready to sew your Heart?

In my view, the After the Rain quilt is just as much about the process as the head-turning product. With a bold use of value, I hope this quilt will tell your story or become a message of solidarity and hope for another. Please join me for the After the Rain Sew-Along!

Over 5 weeks of stitching, starting at the end of January, we'll create the After the Rain quilt.  It’s a simple, straightforward quilt with a modern aesthetic.

New to machine paper piecing? Never fear. This is the most simplest foundation piecing ever, and super ideal for your first time. The pattern includes a detailed step-by-step photo tutorial. Plus, I’ll be sharing a video of my foundation paper piecing to help you visualize the process.

Jump in to grow and win prizes along the way!  You can sew-along, whatever your pace!

the Quilt

You know how the world shines and sparkles, after the rain? When the sunshine bounces off wet branches, dark sidewalks and washed-clean walls? I like to think this quilt is akin to that fresh moment. Stormy rain cloud fabrics are swept away to reveal bright, open skies. Such a sharp contrast.

After the Rain is sewn with foundation machine paper piecing. This method easily yields sharp points for the half rectangle triangle shape. Since this is such a simple block to paper piece, no prior experience with machine paper piecing is needed. A photo tutorial included in the pdf After the Rain quilt pattern demonstrates the paper piecing steps.

My sew-along After the Rain quilt will be for a friend who’s soldiered through a particularly tough 2020. I’m hoping that the new year brings her fresh light and hope.

the Supplies

The After the Rain pattern includes 3 quilt sizes: baby, throw and queen/king. You can make either size during the sew-along, or even another size of your own creation. The sew-along calendar is designed with a throw size quilt in mind.

This quilt relies on the use of value to create contrast in the patchwork design. The pattern reviews value concepts and guides you in using fabrics in 5 different value levels: lightest, light, medium, dark, darkest. For each column of the quilt, I suggest a specific value recipe (for example: lightest with medium), helping you replicate the balance of my design.

After the Rain uses just 15 fabrics for the throw size version! As such, it is not fat quarter friendly. Most cuts are 1/2 yard. Please consult your copy of the pattern for the fabric requirements table appropriate for your size quilt.

Do you like pieced backings? Consider buying larger cuts than needed in some of your favorite fabrics. I like to make an improv backing with leftovers from After the Rain. It seems particularly fitting with this quilt!

You’ll also need regular printer paper for printing out the paper foundations. They make the sewing super-easy and precise!
