ice cream colored Patchwork Hearts

This month for Comfort Circle in do. Good Stitches, our lead quilter is treating us to ice cream hearts. That’s ice cream colored hearts, made from patchwork, and boy do they hit the spot!

I mean, just look at these colors. Delish!

At left is Rineke’s Pinterest inspiration pin, which she shared with our bee to steer us in the right direction. The collage is curated by Love Print Studio.

My accompanying fabric pull is entirely sourced from my scrap drawers. It’s nice how scraps narrow the options in moments like this.

I’ve been craving some simple, easy-sew patchwork to balance out the detailed work I’ve been sewing this year. We’re using this free pattern from Cluck, Cluck Sew to make hearts in multiple sizes. The pattern is simple and scrap-friendly.

Rineke is allowing a variety of background colors, so long as they are solids. I think the finished quilt is going to look awesome!

As per my bee mate’s prompt, all blocks are to finish at 6” square. The smaller hearts have extra background added to bring them up to size. Rineke’s planning to mix in solid square blocks so that the hearts are floating, as inspired by this quilt by Film in the Fridge.

I was able to cut and sew these five hearts in a pleasant hour and half. Hmm, they look quite at home here. I should probably pack them up before I start to get any ideas.

I’ll also be mailing out May’s bee block now, thought it is a bit late. Sorry, friends! In May our circle made apartment blocks, all with different layouts, except for a consistently sized and placed door. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until I found that scrap fabric which looks like stained glass to me. Here in The Netherlands some of the houses built early in the last century have lovely stained glass above the windows. So, I guess my block turned into the fancy apartment with metallic red/gold walls?. Hopefully it fits in well with the others!

Thanks for having me in the Comfort circle, ladies. I’m happy to be back to this fun way to sew for charity again.
