Quilt Sandwich Solids Challenge Victories!

Happy Friday to all!

Today I get to have some fun showing off the creations made by our Quilt Sandwich Solids Challengers.  These makers didn't mess around!  The original challenge prompted each to work with the 10 fabrics included in the seasonal bundle of their choice. These seasonal palettes were created by Quilt Sandwich from their stock of Painter’s Palette solids. Challengers could add additional solid fabrics as desired and had a little over two weeks for the making.

First up, Pat @We10Mom, who created a Trip-Around-the-World quilt using Bonnie Hunter’s tutorial. Pat completed the quilt top in just a couple days, thanks to the speedy patchwork style. After cutting all the colors in the Winter bundle into strips, “I used my camera to take a photo of the strips and switched them to black and white to assess the values,” explains Pat. Then she divided the strips into two groups and made two sets of identical blocks:

Such a smart and simple approach! I think you’ll agree that the results are very pleasing.

Pat will donate this 48” x 48” quilt to Comfort Cases, an organization that concentrates on providing quilts to children in foster care. Great idea!

Also, Pat wants to mention that “the fabric is lovely and the fat quarters were quite generous. You know how FQs can sometimes be a little on the stingy side? Not these.”

Next we have Jamie @GummieWormBelly. She decided on a flying geese quilt for her Spring palette bundle.

Ta da! Isn’t that lovely! The geese are 2” x 4”, making a 41” x 50” quilt that’s going to be a special surprise for a 1-year-old in Jamie’s life. Lucky ducky!

And from our third challenger, Kara Jamison, we have another experience with the popular Winter bundle. She purchased an extra fat quarter set of the bundle so that she’d have 1/2 yards total and also added a few solids from her own stash to bring total color count to 15.

Kara knew she wanted to make a bargello-style quilt. She spent some time auditioning the order of the fabrics in different lights and moments of her day. When fully satisfied, she recorded the proper fabric order on a planning sheet. I believe it when she says that was “very important” during the sewing process!

The finished quilt fairly takes my breath away! Her goal was to capture the feeling of a windy winter day. She worked without a pattern and certainly hit the mark! The final quilt is 55” x 60”.

All of the challengers rose to the occasion and our last challenger is certainly no exception. Vibiana @V_Shelton set out to recreate a wolf drawing using foundation paper piecing. Quite a brave soul, given that this would only be her second time paper piecing!

I took the original picture into Adobe Photoshop and changed the colors to match the beautiful fabric. Next, I created the paper piecing pattern and the design I wanted for the quilt. I had lots of learning moments working on this project.

I know I would have had lots of learning moments creating such a complex pattern too, Vibiana. Kudos to you for having the courage to tackle this.

Also, I love the way you used the Summer bundle colors in your composition.

Vibiana plans to set the wolf in a mountain scene, like so. Do keep going with it, .Vibiana! It’s going to be a very special finish.

A great big thanks to all challengers for inspiring us with your creativity!  It's incredible to see all that can be done with these Painter’s Palette solids. And, of course, thanks to Quilt Sandwich for composing the seasonal bundles and sharing them with us!

P.S. there are more up for grabs in their Washington State based Etsy shop!
