Silk, Citrus + Granny Squares
Good news - I am making excellent progress on my Trellis quilt. This is the one inspired by that amazing Fableism plaid from Floyd the Fox and a quilt sketch from years ago.
After sewing those first blocks, I decided to go for this busy multicolor print, resembling granny crochet squares. The print has a strong retro vibe, which I’ve heightened by pairing it with the running stitch woven instead of plain white.
Aren’t those adorable 9-patch blocks! Love, love, love.
At this point I arranged my blocks on the design wall in the proper quilt layout and began filling in the empty spaces with fabric ideas. By pinning yardage to the design wall where future blocks will come, I plan ahead for color placement. I like to repeat colors in a way that moves the eye diagonally across the quilt, so I often place same-colors diagonally from each other.
And look at this batch of fussy-cut bees! There is probably no better way to use this adorable Art Gallery print called Marigold Bumble Blush.
It’s come into the spotlight as the feature print for my extra wide X-block. And did you notice that my designs all has a corner? Yep. Making do.
So! Here is my Trellis quilt so far. All of the solid white is 100% silk, made from silk wedding dress scraps that someone gave me. The silk is crisp enough to easily cut and sew for patchwork, but the long, slippery fibers do like to unravel at the edges. I’ll be quilting this project somewhat densely to make sure it finishes strong and secure.
Just a few more blocks left!
