Checkers in Ombre

It’s Friday, friends! By this time all members of Pas de Deux should have received their May club delivery. I think I know what mama wants for Mother’s Day - - - A little stay-in-and-sew-day on Saturday or Sunday? Yes, that sounds perfectly delightful.

I’ve been adding to my Pas de Deux quilt, version 2.0. The Checkers group was underway earlier this week.

Do you know what I love? Cutting scraps. I just love, love, love cutting scraps into sweet little 2.5” squares. Throw in a fussy cut here and there for the cherry on top = heaven. Plus, I went for a fun ombre fade. My Checkers are purple combined with a blend from white to cream to peach to orange.

This time with my Pas de Deux quilt, it’s all about making connections between the groups. The Checkers group is an easy one for that. I decided to start with pale colors at the top of Checkers because of the pale colors in the HST blocks directly above. The idea to build an ombre blend developed as a way of working toward orange.

Why orange? To echo the partial orange star at top left. The orange in Checkers will pull the eye diagonally from the star, creating movement and more visual unity.

Now that the quilt is about halfway done, I’m thinking strategically about what color patterns to repeat. I will be bringing in another dark blue group (below at center) and another group with lots of white, to echo those portions of the quilt. Maybe more progress this weekend?

Happy Mother’s Day to all!
