sunshine + evening stars

I grew up in California and raised my own kids in South Carolina, two lands where the sun shines so often we took it for granted. Here in The Netherlands the climate is more cloudy and drizzly, like the Pacific northwest or England, I’ve been told. Thus, when Easter weekend brings buckets of sunshine and near 70 degree temperatures, it is a gift indeed.

On Saturday I caught a few hours in my sewing room to add to my Pas de Deux quilt. That was my Easter treat!

I sewed the Evening Star blocks, which are the “block of the month” this April for those who began the Pas de Deux club at the start of this year. These are applique blocks. As such, the background “star” can be whole and uncut. I wanted to try out using background fabrics in all the colors of my quilt. The cut squares above are my background choices.

But how to arrange those background colors? Here’s when a design wall comes in super handy. I’ve arranged the backgrounds on my wall and pinned the quarter-circles over them as necessary to hold things in place. I’ll balance the irregularity of the background fabrics with continuous circles made of same-fabrics rather than a mix-and-match approach.

And, ta da, my blocks! I’m enjoying the colorful mix.

If you’re sewing along with Pas de Deux, maybe this gives you some ideas for your own Evening Star ensemble. On the other hand, lots of you have already finished your groups, and I’ve been really impressed with the results.

Cheers to your lovely ideas and execution!
