A Colorful Thread: June 2021

Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind

Planning:: a very special visit from a friend. Our first American visitor will turn out to be a friend who hopes immigrate to The Netherlands. How exciting and surreal! She arrives on Monday to stay with us for two weeks. Together we’ll take the necessary steps to begin her immigration process as an entrepreneur, based on the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. This is the same route I took toward becoming a Dutch resident. I’m super stoked to show her the ropes, jazzed to see her again in real life and hopeful that The Netherlands will offer her and her children a wonderful new life here!

Reading:: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. I came across this book several times, but the description never fully captured me. Then it became June’s book club choice, and once started, I couldn’t put it down. The story is sad, but beautifully told and redemptive. It strikes me as quite real. It’s set in coastal North Carolina, which reminded me so much of coastal South Carolina. Highly recommend!

Celebrating:: this glowing Economy Star Parade quilt in progress by @TerisQuiltLife. She’s used bright colors and very dark stars, much like myself, but her choice of low volumes for layer three gives it a lovely, airy feel. And look at all those fun fussy cuts! Well, I absolutely love it! Low volumes were definitely a great choice in this case.

Anticipating:: starting a new quilt! Today I’m quilting my own Economy Star Parade project. When I get to this point with a quilt, I can’t help but begin dreaming about my next make. This time I know exactly what’s coming up.

These charming fabrics by Rifle Paper Company are winging their way overseas to me now from Sojo Fabric. The Holiday Classics collection is ripe for some Christmas in July sewing! They would be perfect for a Christmas tree skirt or a fresh set of Christmas stockings (see my Trimming Pattern Pack), but I’m making a quilt. Because yeah. I like to do that.

More exciting news - - - We’re going on vacation to France! July is shaping up to be bursting full between my friend’s visit and our family trip to southern France. We’re going by train via Paris and Montpellier to spend a week in the Gorges du Tarn and another by the sea at Port Camargue. I still need to learn how to say these places properly in French, haha. (I actually studied French in high school, but it wasn’t very effective.) Anyhoo, this is going to be quite the exotic trip for us. I’m still pinching myself! I promise to take pictures and share some highlights when we return.

xoxo,
