A Colorful Thread: January 2024

Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind

Experimenting:: with dating again. Floris and I broke it off earlier this month. Of course I was very sad that it did not work out, and you saw some of that grief in the My Heart Like Bright Pink Confetti poem post.  It is the end of one relationship, but it is also progress for me in finding someone to love in a fulfilling, healthy way.  I am open to starting a new chapter in that journey.

Reading:: Attached: the New Theory of Adult Attachment by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. I was tipped to this book by a friend and devoured it within a week. It was instrumental in helping me to understand what wasn’t working in my relationship and to be brave enough to take healthy action.

Winter Creek Cloth

Beautiful solid bundles in tempting palettes in stock now at Winter Creek Cloth. Which one could jumpstart your next project?

Celebrating:: An amazing wintry finish by @hey.sparrow.quilts. Wow, wow, wow! Her bright and beautiful rendition of my Circus Cabin quilt pattern couldn’t look more amazing.

Anticipating::  Starting my next quilt! I’m not 100% sure, but I may attempt to turn one of my favorite improv quilts into a pattern. To make that happen, I would first sew the quilt again and through doing so create a recipe that others could follow. I am nervous, but excited about the idea!

Quilting in an Organic Grid

Stitched in Color includes a library of free tutorials, more than 10 years in the making. Each month I’ll feature one to spread the good news.

Quilting on a home machine? It is tricky, but not impossible. Once upon a time a reader asked me for tips on quilting a loose, organic grid, like I did with my Oodalolly quilt below. The organic grid is definitely a beginner-friendly approach. Give it a try!

This year is off to a very good start in terms of my creativity. I’m been feeling energized by the things I have sewn. Plus, your response to Positivities was really, well positive and that is an amazing blessing to me.

I know I am like a broken record on this, but I truly am so very grateful for the opportunity to do this work. I get to enjoy your kind, encouraging company, to be creative from my heart and to fit it all around my role as mother while living in the country of my choice. What an incredible gift! I totally don’t take it for granted. Thank you, thank you!

xoxo,

Rachel
