In the Quilting Studio, No. 15

Are you curious about longarm quilting? If you’ve been on the fence about sending a quilt out to be quilted, now’s the time to make the leap. It’s a great feeling to start the New Year with a finish! I have a coupon for you at the close of this blog post.

But first, here are more lovely projects I had the blessing of quilting in 2019.

Leafy by Melanie Meyer

I absolutely adore the lush colors of Mell Meyer’s (@mellmeyer) Leafy quilt. It’s green, green, green + playful! And don’t miss the absolutely perfect backing print, peaking out at the top left corner of this photo.

Melanie sourced this loopy, leaf quilting pattern for her all over quilting service. I was quite glad to add it to my natural shapes pattern collection. Since I use a computer-guided longarm quilting machine, expanding my offerings is a snap. This particular pattern has a modern style and even coverage. Good eye, Melanie!

Charley Harper quilts by Sabine Hofferer

One of my repeat customers, Sabine Hofferer, sent me two quilt tops made with iconic Charley Harper fabrics. They’re so very different! Take a look.

Custom Harper quilt.jpg

This first one is a square quilt, perhaps 50” on each side. The composition is so unique and quite ideal for featuring picture fabrics. With the birds floating in the center and the flying geese patchwork shooting around the border, it combines a sense of calm and movement.

Sabine requested custom quilting. Since there is not a lot of piecing here, I was able to keep the quilt soft and cuddly with minimal quilting. The birds are floating in puffy clouds, while the bird fabrics themselves are accented with prismatic sparkles, placed so as not to disrupt the images.

I’m really pleased with the feathery arrow quilting in the border!

Her second Charley Harper quilt is a generous throw size. She requested all-over quilting:

I chose Baptist Fan, which is in keeping with the mod style of the fabrics and patchwork. It looks fantastic back and front, don’t you think?

Fox Quilt by Puppilalla

My friend Katrin (@Puppilalla) did me the favor of translating the quilting service portion of my website into German. In exchange we had a quilting date, where we custom quilted this baby quilt together.

Such a great time! I had never worked on a custom quilt with the customer in person before. We gradually discovered our quilting plan together and watched it unfold. I think Katrin enjoyed the process as much as I. Oh, and it took longer than either of us expected, haha!

Do you like the puffy fullness of this little quilt? I believe Katrin used a wool batting or certainly something with some loft. The extra cushion should be appreciated by the little one who now enjoys it.

Is your Quilt Next?

How do you know if you have a good candidate for longarm quilting? Maybe one of these scenarios sounds familiar -

  1. You’ve been putting off quilting it because it’s so special to you. You’re afraid of messing it up!

  2. It’s been living in your closet for ages. Let’s be real - you might never get to it.

  3. You’re on a deadline (or, oops, the holidays already passed!), so you’d like to get it finished asap.

  4. It’s ginormous and quilting it might actually cause injury (this has happened to me) or in fact be impossible on your home machine.

  5. You’d rather start the next quilt!
