Winter, a Circus Cabin quilt

The Circus Cabin quilt pattern is one I expect I will come back to again and again. When you want to just relax, unwind and sew through your scraps, this pattern is a sure win. And then the finish! That dramatic, dark vs. light log cabin magic gets me every time.

I took a bit of a risk with the quilting, opting for Monaco. This is an edge-to-edge quilting design with a flourish. The repeat makes fancy clusters of shapes that would be too busy on most quilts, but on simple log cabin patchwork, I think it works nicely. It definitely has an elegant vibe, which is what I wanted for these colors and fabrics.

I guess when photographed while the sun shines on this grassy hill, maybe the quilt doesn’t shout “Winter!” But if you curl up with it on a dark rainy day, the cool evergreens, aquas, lavenders, grays, deep blues and cranberry reds will feel exactly like January or February or November. Winter, hmmm, it does have a certain sameness, doesn’t it?. I’m glad that we’re inching closer to spring.

I enjoyed creating a freeform backing, using yardage pieces and the odd larger scrap. That bird print, especially, wanted to find itself in a quilt backing, don’t you think? The binding is scrappy too! I used long scrap pieces already set aside for the quilt.

So, that’s a wrap. This quilt will soon be on its way to America, heading to one of my dear readers who purchased her in advance.

It’s really been a great sew-along! I’m not the only one already celebrating a finished quilt. Check out the community pics on Instagram at #CircusCabinQuilt. It’s been a pleasure to sew-along with you, friends. Each work-in-progress is turning into a beauty. Wishing you continued joy in this creative outlet!
