Bright + Shady Coin Quilt

She’s finished!

This quilt was a treat to sew. I loved that it made great use of my longest string scraps to create super tall coin stacks. The patchwork recipe felt efficient and fun!

Now that she’s finished, I name this quilt Bright + Shady after my 2018 color inspiration contest.

Bright for the gifts and the laughter and the fresh start to come.
Color upon color for our love of making, our innermost artsy selves.
Shady for the drama of life, its ebb and flow, its birth and death. See how the light shines in the darkness? The bright and the dark mingle, like all this year’s highs and lows, to create something of value. Something as ordinary as it is lovely.

It’s funny to me that she turned out so bright and shady. The whole time I was sewing this quilt, I was trying to use as much blue as possible! But you can’t tell - like At All. Haha! I also avoided green, which is arguable my favorite color. I did dive into my multicolor scraps too, and even included some Christmas fabrics. So yes, this one is ready for all the seasons, however bright and/or shady.

Even the binding is scrappy (and blue)!

And the backing is quite bright and shady. I used fun, bright multicolor prints, mostly by Anna Maria Horner, plus some dark florals for contrast. I LOVE how this turned out.

Did you notice the quilting? This is a new-to-me longarm quilting motif called Fusion. Gosh, it looks good! It has a dynamic feeling, but isn’t harsh since it’s all curves. Here I’ve quilted it at medium-high density, to make sure to reinforce all the tiny seams in this coin quilt. Recently, I also quilted it more open for a large-scale quilt. The resulting texture was nice and soft, like baptist fan. I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot more Fusion around here!

So, that’s a wrap! This happy scrappy quilt is now listed in my Handmades shop. I’d love to send her to YOUR home for a Christmas cuddle. Thanks for supporting my work, friends, whether with your purchase or your comments. It’s all a blessing to me.

xoxo,

Rachel
