in the Quilting Studio, no. 45

Is it the end of October already? Boy does time fly when you’re having fun! I hope that you have been enjoying these cozy, fall quilt-making days if you also find yourself in the northern hemisphere. I have had the pleasure of helping my European clients finish off a fresh batch of their beautiful quilts. Here are several that I am lucky to share with you this month.

Nineteen Thirty by Ils verhaegen

What a pleasure it was to see this rendition of my Nineteen Thirty quilt pattern in person! I love Ils’ soft, sweet palette and how the inclusion of rich chocolate brown brings depth to that sweetness.

Her stunning Nineteen Thirty medallion floats in the center just beautifully, don’t you think?

Plus, check out what she has done with the contrasting petal colors on the orchid flowers! Totally fun.

We finished the quilt with allover quilting, which is not a bad idea for visually complicated quilt. Even the really special, complicated quilts sometimes look best with the simplest quilting. It pulls things together rather than overcomplicating things.

I think that this pretty Lily flower was a lovely quilting choice! You can follow Ils on Instagram at @Hartedeken. She also makes quilts on order for others from sentimental clothing.

Dance with Me by Zen Chic

Every time I receive a package from Zen Chic designer Brigitte Heitland I know that I am in for a treat. I have the opportunity of longarm quilting many of her quilts, which are made to show off her modern fabric collections. This November the collection called Bluish is releasing as well as the patterns that correspond to these projects.

Introducing Dance with Me - a tribute to vintage vinyl records. The funky circular shapes are appliquéd, making this a suitable quilt for a confident beginner.

As you can see, we opted to emphasize those records by quilting concentric circular lines around each one. This kind of quilting is quite time-intensive, but the effect is golden.

Around the edges of Dance with Me I quilted a meander fill, just to give the quilt a nice texture and a sort of faux-border finish.

You can buy the Dance with Me pattern and other Bluish patterns at Zen Chic. What a great pattern for a teenager, don’t you think? Or any vinyl record aficionado. Hey, I know one - - -

Lotus by Zen Chic

This quilt is also made with Brigitte’s Bluish fabrics and the pattern is available here. In contrast to Dance with Me, which is appliquéd, Lotus is machine pieced. I think this is one of those patterns that would suit lots of different styles of fabric.

Brigitte always has a clear idea of how she wants her projects quilted. I enjoy that dynamic because she introduces fresh ideas and new-to-me quilting textures that enrich my perspective as a longarm quilter. For example, she realized that the Multi Curve motif would be amazing custom-quilted on Lotus. Just look how it tracks with the blocks! An absolutely brilliant insight on her part.

And, by the way, Brigitte uses her Modern Background script print to back most of her quilts. It’s a wideback fabric that really works well with everything. I highly recommend it too!

Half Square Triangles by Carly P.

And last, but certainly not least, is this classic Half Square Triangle quilt by Carly P. This is one of those quilt concepts that is simple, but mighty. A classic block + repeated fabrics = patchwork delight.

Isn’t that a fun, punchy color scheme? I like that the background fabric is a butter yellow print, rather than plain white. That’s much more practical too, as far as stains are concerned.

And did you notice the quilting texture? Ooh la la! I’ve dubbed this Distortion and added it to my quilting designs catalog. It has a fantastic modern vibe, but leaves quilts soft and drapey, as you can see below. That is a winning combination!

I’d be happy to finish your projects with a beautiful quilting texture too. My services are available to those who live throughout the European region. Please be in touch if you have any questions or start the process off by placing your order. I can’t wait to collaborate on YOUR quilt!
