Circus Cabin: Week 5 Border + your Quilts

You know what? I’m glad that it is the last week of our Circus Cabin sew-along. I’ve been pacing myself with this quilt, when I really could have flown through the blocks in a week! As of this week, I give myself permission to finish it, and I’m looking forward to the quilting stage. How about you?

Week 5: sew Border

When it comes to sewing your border blocks, you might start cutting and sewing willy-nilly with an eye to using up your scraps. That works for me for a few border blocks, but after that I like to start visualizing where each one is destined to land. I prefer to keep alternating solids and prints and aim to keep the colors well-distributed. This takes a little planning.

My process is to choose which fabrics I will use for a border block. Then I look at the work-in-progress to see where such a border block would work well. Finally, I sew a left-side or right-side border block, depending upon that destination.

The borders are a great chance to repeat your favorite scrap fabrics! Use up the very last drops.

And before you know it - ta da! A dramatic scrappy wonder, complete with a border that frames it all.

I’m off to piece a backing today from stash yardage. A scrappy backing and scrappy binding are calling me this time. Happy finishing, everyone!
