Stitched in Color

in the Quilting Studio, no. 39

January has been quiet in my longarm quilting studio, but I don't mind. My head has been full of new quilts, and maybe it is the same with my clients! This is a nice time of year to turn towards something fresh and shiny for a mid-winter boost. Today’s quilts were quilted in 2022 during the holiday season. It’s a pleasure to share them with you!

Pas de Deux by Sonja Brack

Hey, hey, hey, another Pas de Deux quilt! Does this one look familiar? Sonja participated in the Pas de Deux block of the month, now available as a complete pattern library, and followed my example color palette. Suggested colors but her own fabrics and scraps, of course. That makes our quilts sisters.

I especially like her Sawtooth Burst group in the upper right corner. The bright, saturated orange emenates a sunlike warmth.

Sonja’s patchwork is so neat and tidy. I can imagine how she enjoyed puzzling these diverse patchwork groups together. Everything fits together just so. Isn’t that so satisfying? You can learn more about her project at her blog.

We opted for Feather Meander quilting for her Pas de Deux sampler. It’s an organic pattern that helps the quilt flow together as a harmonious whole.

Hexagon Sampler BY MADELON @MADDIE_SEWS

This one is such fun, both from afar and super close up. Each hexagon in this sampler cleverly showcases special, fussy-cut fabrics.

Now let’s look closer - - -

What a treasure, right? I could look at this quilt for days, and I’m sure Madelon did for many, many days, since the hexagons are hand-pieced. I imagine it was quite a pleasure to dream up each block.

With a cheery carnival palette and retro-inspired fabrics, I figured it deserved a quilting pattern as sweet. Cherries fit the bill! The motif is quilted just small enough to catch every piece in the quilt, for a durable finish. Notice that we’ve used an all-over pattern, even though the quilt has borders. Totally an option! The quilting pattern shows up on the borders in a lovely manner, don’t you agree?

What a fabulous finish!

Quilt Sandwich

Are you a fan of Kimberly Kight? I find that her designs still shine when all cut up as patchwork. Her latest collection for Ruby Start Society is called Petunia. Catch yardage or a fat quarter bundle of these sweet, springy fabrics at Quilt Sandwich!

Trees by YVONNE @PAPIERWERKSTATT

I admire Yvonne. The way she uses color and fabric is inspiring. Her tree quilt is a splendid compiling of myriad tree patchwork styles and a sprinkling of stars. It appears that she used machine paper piecing, traditional piecing and improv to create this winter forest.

The variety is impressive, isn’t it? The way that she switches between dark and light values for the backgrounds is visually engaging. Plus, don’t miss the fully on-theme backing she created, perhaps using leftover fabrics and blocks.

Lucky me to be asked to quilt it! We decided on Summit for her tree quilt, and I think it came out great. It has a vaguely mountaineous vibe in a simple, modern way.

I hope someone is snuggling under it already, on these cold winter days.
