Ikat Quilt Sew-Along

_MG_3890full.JPG

Let’s get a little fancy!

Some quilts require a bit of planning, a touch of organization. That’s my skill set, so let’s do this together! This summer we’ll sew an oldie, but goodie made up of simple squares and rectangles that together create an intricate effect.

This sew-along is based on the tried and true Ikat quilt pattern! As part of my Color Mentor pattern series, it lays a foundation for understanding value and its importance when selecting fabrics for patchwork.

In the making of your Ikat quilt, you will have many opportunities to use value contrast to define the design. Do you prefer maximum or medium value contrast? We’ll find out together!

Join in on the fun by subscribing to my blog and following #IkatQuilt on Instagram. Your shared sew-along photos might end up shared here on the blog and qualify you to win a special prize in September.

You can sew-along, whatever your pace!

The Ikat Quilt

a study in value

This patchwork design is created with large, 19.5" finished blocks that meet at the edges to create secondary patterns. Even though the patchwork looks intricate, it's actually straightforward to sew with no special seams. Traditionally pieced. Suitable for confident beginners or intermediate quilters.

Pattern includes 4 sizes: throw, twin, queen + king.

the Supplies

This is a fat quarter friendly quilt! You’ll use yardage for the “sashing” fabrics that echo around the plus shapes. For the main Ikat diamonds, fat quarters are perfect.

Fabric Tips - Use solid fabrics for sashing fabrics C and D to give your Ikat diamonds visual space to shine. Use your favorite prints for the Ikat diamonds outer (B fabrics). Small to medium scale prints work well. Avoid picture motifs (animals, people, etc.). Instead, choose prints that will look good cut up and rearranged! I recommend solids or near solids for the Ikat diamond centers (A fabrics).

Would you like me to choose those fabrics for you? I have prepared two versions of Ikat quilt, available now via my sponsor shops: Amber and Jade. Stay tuned this week for more info.

THROW SIZE QUILT

  • 6 fat quarters for the Ikat diamond centers

  • 12 fat quarters for the Ikat diamond outers

  • 2 yards of “C” sashing fabric (black in Chai Rose version)

  • 1 1/2 yards of “D” sashing fabric (white in Chai Rose version)

  • Leftovers from your Ikat fat quarters for the Plus shapes!

Have you ever snuggled a quilt with cuddle or minky backing? They're amazing. They really are in a whole different category from traditional quilting cotton quilts. These plush, pet-able fabrics make a quilt much warmer and fluffier with a cozier drape. My daughter has requested a Cuddle backing for her Ikat quilt, which got me thinking that you might love the same!
