August in Quilter's Color Quest

This month in Quilter’s Color Quest we’re exploring the final exercises in The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color: A Hands-on Workbook for Mastering Fabric Selection. I’ve already shared some thoughts for Stash and Style, and started the finishing process on my bear paw quilt. Let’s take a moment to see what you’ve been up to!

I love Cat’s example of how to follow the Inspiration challenge, which she shared via the book hop in February. @TinCatSew she shared, “I took off on my bike to our local wharf and noticed a repeat of a few key colours. As I was on my way home I noticed an abandoned boat in a junk yard. I knew right away that was the image I wanted to work with and it contained lots of the colours I had seen on my journey.

Matching the colour swatches from the book to the image was a lot of fun and then scouring my stash for the perfect match was so satisfying.”

Let’s see what you uncovered when you deliberately opened yourself to fresh inspiration. Here are some examples from our community:

This challenge is about how helpful fabrics can make it easier to use limiting fabrics. Holly of @BijouLovely says that she finds herringbone prints Iike these from 1Canoe2’s Goldenrod collection to be extremely helpful. She paired the herringbone basics with a lovely floral by Rifle Paper Fabric Co. in response to the Stash challenge. And then she couldn’t resist creating a whole fabric bundle emerging from the combination!

Spice up Your Stash

Each month during Quilter’s Color Quest, I have created a custom bundle with one of my fantastic sponsor shops. Here’s the idea - as you get to know color better, you often realize that your stash could use some balancing. Do you enjoy my eye for color or fabrics? Cool! Then, these bundles might be the spark of something new and exciting!

Aaaaaand, each month the 16-piece, fat quarter custom bundle also serves as the prize for one lucky participant in Quilter’s Color Quest. Each photo you post to Instagram with #QuiltersColorQuest enters you to win the monthly giveaway. So, go out there and do the work! There are lots of good reasons to enjoy this process together.

Helpful Fabric bundles

There are lots of great helpful fabrics available to quilters today. Among my personal favorites are the Cotton & Steel basics line. Their modern textures are easy to use, whether cut up small or used in larger pieces, plus they offer them in so many colors. In fact, the huge range of colors can be a tad overwhelming!

If you’re like me, you’ve probably considered buying ALL of the Sprinkle prints or ALL off the XOXO fabrics or ALL of the Netorious collection at one point or another. But, you know you don’t need all that fabric, haha. For August I’ve created two bundles from Cotton & Steel basics which represent a wide range of their colors and a wide range of their prints. This way, you can buy a little of everything, maintaining diversity in your helpful fabric stash while still investing in a rainbow of easy-to-use basics.

I hope you like them!
