Seafarers Compass blocks

Look what I just finished!

It’s a charming quartet of Compass blocks for my Seafarers quilt. Each block is 16” finished, slightly smaller than the 18” Compass that will anchor the center of my quilt-in-progress. These new, 16” blocks will be placed at all four corners of Seafarers.

Those in the Penny Sampler Pattern Club already stitched one Compass block way back in January. If you were new to paper piecing, Compass might have been challenging; but, now that you’ve gained so much experience, I think you’ll find this block is a breeze. I love the large scale. It doesn’t require so many pieces but still makes quite an impact. Plus, you can easily use a directional background fabric. Yay!

Speaking of backgrounds, that’s more showy Hindsight by Anna Maria Horner. I’ve used the Sinister Gatherings prints in two different colors. Careful cutting allowed me to mostly exclude the moths, which might have made the compass centers undefined. The solids are by Freespirit - Spring green and Caribbean aqua.

These blocks are part of a group of Penny Sampler blocks that I’ve re-used in my Seafarers quilt design. I plan to deliver the Seafarers pattern with June’s delivery. By the way, May’s delivery just mailed out yesterday. If you don’t see yours, check spam and then let me know. If you’re thinking of joining the club now, do it! I’ll send you all the already-published materials so you can jump right in.

Fingers crossed I can complete this quilt top in May. Hmm, I seem to be cutting it close!
