the Penny Sampler quilt
So what is this Penny Sampler anyways? The Penny Sampler is my modern sampler quilt. It began with Scandinavian inspiration, its folk notes and modern melodies combined. These influences yielded a framework of ideas - miniature pictures, small geometric piecing, intricate sashing, a pointy border.
I wanted it to be lively, unexpected, definitely different than your everyday sampler quilt. So, I threw out regular gridwork and traditionally placed sashing. Instead blocks are a smorgesboard of sizes, sashing falls here and there for movement, layers of interest. The border is broken up and resized in a decidedly unpredictable way. All this aiming to be true to the quirky charm of modern Scandinavian style.
And now I’ve developed a fresh version inspired by my love for our new home in The Netherlands. The 2020 Penny Sampler combines fun, picture blocks (like the Windmill) with fancy geometric blocks (like today’s Compass). For simplicity, the blocks are all paper-pieced, yielding predictably delightful results!
It finishes as a 66” x 73” throw quilt.
the Pattern Club
A pattern club is a steady stream of patchwork fun. This one is thoughtfully paced so that the sashing and filler blocks are interspersed with more showy work to keep you engaged. Expect to make about three blocks per month. We start off with the simpler ones and work up to more complex designs. Gradually your paper piecing skills build, along with your epic sampler!
You’ll find this compass block in your first delivery. It’s such a strong, exciting block, but the paper piecing is really quite simple!
Our 2020 pattern club features overs 30 paper pieced designs, swappable blocks and alternate layouts. With the club, you can make a Nordic-inspired Penny Sampler, much like the original, or the brand-new Dutch version. Or, you can mix and match to create a look all your own!
Club members receive monthly installments of original, digital patterns designed for the Penny Sampler quilt. All patterns are PDF’s and printable on standard paper.
Between the 5th and 10th of each month, Jan-Nov in 2020, you’ll receive a club email with:
3 paper pieced block patterns

Tips for each leg of the journey - especially about choosing fabrics
Plus, occasional extras like traditionally pieced versions of some blocks, two alternate quilt layouts and a surprise technique to try! December is quilt assembly and quilting ideas.
I love the compass block so much, that It became the focal point for one of those alternate layouts. Seafarers is a medallion style quilt celebrating the beauty of old-world seaports. Directions for making this alternate layout will deliver to club-members in June, just in time for beach weather!
