pretty in Pink

When we began talking about moving to a new house, Elora had clear ideas about her future room.

  1. It should be her OWN room (really, at age 4?)

  2. Everything should be Pink! (no surprise at age 4)

In reality, she shares her room with Aria. We painted the walls a lovely, deep teal - one of Aria’s favorite colors and something more long-lasting than pink. To make it up to Elora, I’ve promised a very pink new quilt for her wee little bed. Time to make good on that promise.

The other day I brought my stack of pink fabrics to Elora’s room to begin choosing fabrics. She surprised me by sorting through them herself. "Yes”, “No”, “No”, “Yes.” Actually, her choices made sense. She ruled out the fabrics with distracting colors and kept everything more generally pink.

Her only weakness in that regard was the Rifle Paper print with “flamingos” on it. I asked her if that fabric had too much blue in it, and she explained that she looooooooves flamingos so it must stay. No problem, I think I can make it work with the rest, and anyways I love that fabric too. Plus, it’s often good to have one or two "odd” fabrics to bring character to the mix.

Elora has asked for a quilt covered with hearts. Pink + hearts - does it get more girly than that? But really, I’m loving it. I know this stage is fleeting. Let’s live it up.

At first I thought I’d make the quilt entirely from 6” heart blocks, but then I got the idea to break up all that sweetness with alternating background blocks. Remember earlier this year when I ordered several yards of this Simple Growth low volume floral from Fat Quarter Shop? I knew it would come in handy, but I didn’t think it would be quite this soon.

Monday morning finds me here, relishing the sunny light slanting across my worktable. I’m sewing hearts with the foundation paper pieced pattern from Penny Sampler. The best thing about it? Each heart is sure to make her smile!
