Maybe it’s the fabric scraps, maybe it’s the colors, maybe it’s the good company (though I quite like sewing alone, truth be told), but this feels like Quilty paradise. A few hours sewing little pieces of fabric together into scrappy quilt blocks pretty well makes my day.

I developed the Confetti quilt pattern in order to replicate a quilt I made earlier via improv sewing methods. For many, improv piecing is a relaxing way to sew, but for others it’s just a headache. Plus, it’s not very reproducible! In order to translate my original Confetti quilt to a quilt pattern, I created a set of four foundation paper piecing patterns and a construction style that introduces irregularity into the process.

The color-coded foundations indicate placement of scraps via diagonal shaded areas. They also call for specific width background strips, with the idea that you won’t need to cross-reference the pattern while sewing. Sewing these blocks takes time, because of all the many pieces, but there is the relaxing element that scraps and background fabrics don’t have to be cut to a particular size before being added. I’m pleased with how it’s working and excited to see your success with the pattern via Instagram!

As of this weekend I’ve met my April goal, completing a total of 8 blocks for my baby-sized Confetti quilt. At last I can really see how they’re going to work together. It’s gratifying that they look so random and improv-style, even though they’re sewn via a pattern. Yay!

Uh-oh, it looks like I really MUST sew another block in order to complete the square. Well, I guess that’s that. Back to the sewing room, haha! Have a great day, everyone.
