Super Scrappy bee blocks

Each month one of my quilting bee mates poses a prompt for our collaborative charity quilt. The prompt is completely unpredictable in terms of pattern, style and color, but one thing is certain: I’ll use fabric scraps. I can nearly always eke out a couple of blocks from my scrap drawers.

Well, some prompts are especially scrap-friendly! May’s is one of them. We’re tasked to sew with bright, saturated colors (any combination!) over a low-volume background. I gathered playful multicolor scraps first. Always glad to use those! Then, I sorted through my neutrals for the low volume crew.

It can all feel a little chaotic, until you start sewing. Soon enough the tidy matched squares and pointy half square triangle blocks bring everything into focus.

Ta da! These three butterflies are of the Super Scrappy variety. Aren’t they merry? Especially as we really embrace spring in the Northern hemisphere.

My bee mates, like miss @Muriel14, have used consistent low volumes for the background bits. The idea never crossed my mind, hahah! I guess that my butterflies are sure to stand out in comparison, but hopefully in a pleasantly quirky way.

Last month’s do. Good Stitches bee prompt was also scrap-friendly (of course). We used orange and blue fabrics, no doubt with the idea that the finished quilt might be donated to a refugee from Ukraine.

Combined with pops of bright white, those scraps became a pair of Scrappy Susannah blocks. You can find the free tutorial at A Bright Corner.

Now it’s time to send those butterflies in the post to May’s lead bee member. I’m curious to discover what prompt June will bring!
