July in Quilter's Color Quest

This month in Quilter’s Color Quest we’re exploring exercises ten and eleven in The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color: A Hands-on Workbook for Mastering Fabric Selection. I’ve already shared my work for picnic-themed blocks for Story. The Inspiration exercise is coming later this week. Let’s take a moment to see what you’ve been up to!

for the Neutrals Challenge - - - pg. 75

Saija @Saija_Elina got us started with the Neutrals challenge over the book hop in February. She said she rarely uses brown and yellow, so this was a good prompt for her to experiment.

I absolutely love how Saija’s blocks look here. As much as I love colorful quilts, quilts that have a more limited color scheme tend to have distinct and interesting personalities.

I gather that using brown and black are a challenge for many of us. Good to see you taking risks with this exercise! Here are some examples from our community:

for the Story Challenge - - - pg. 81

Svetlana of @SotakHandmade says she doesn’t usually consciously think about color when working on her projects. I’m glad that she still enjoyed the Story challenge. She based her palette on a favorite photo of a beautiful canal and surrounding houses in the center of Utrecht, her hometown. Wow!

I love how she miniaturized the block and used them to make coasters!

Spice up Your Stash

Each month during Quilter’s Color Quest, I will create a custom bundle with one of my fantastic sponsor shops. Here’s the idea - as you get to know color better, you often realize that your stash could use some balancing. Do you enjoy my eye for color or fabrics? Cool! Then, these bundles might be the spark of something new and exciting!

Aaaaaand, each month the 16-piece, fat quarter custom bundle also serves as the prize for one lucky participant in Quilter’s Color Quest. Each photo you post to Instagram with #QuiltersColorQuest enters you to win the monthly giveaway. So, go out there and do the work! There are lots of good reasons to enjoy this process together.

For July I’ve created two 8-piece fabric bundles, each a distinct story.

Kinder Garden

a child’s imagination

This story began with the King of Beasts fabric, a 100% organic fabric by Cloud 9 which features a crowned child-beast hiding in dreamy blue foliage. A young child doesn’t need exciting outings or fancy toys. Open-ended outdoor play, some time to let their imagination explore in the garden - that is the magic that lends itself to happiness and health.

I created this Kinder Garden bundle with little ones like my Rora in mind. Thus, it has the bold primary hues that young kids tend to love, combined with fanciful nature motifs. Notice a full range of values too - from dark to medium to light.

Maybe it inspires you to make something for an imaginative little one in your life?

Twilight

lingering light + gentle evenings

Lately in The Netherlands, the days are long with darkness falling ever so gently and every so slowly. As the light slowly softens, it warms and glows. Such elegance in twilight hours!

My Twilight bundle hopes to catch that beautiful contrast between light and dark at the close of the day. Soft peachy hues mix with somber grays and deep blues.

This sophisticated palette brings to mind something all grown up, like a limited palette Ice Cream Soda quilt or values-oriented After the Rain.

Our lucky winner will be chosen at random on August 1st to win both story bundles! I will use Instagram messaging to be in touch to organize shipping of the prize.

Thanks for supporting my sponsor, Fenceline Fabrics!
