Summer Sampler Update!

Week 3 blocks

Here are my Week 3 blocks for the Summer Sampler Series. I know that many of you are playing along because I've been seeing your blocks at the Flickr group!

6-pointed Star

The first block last week was this 6-pointed star.  Kate showed versions with and without pieced star points.  In retrospect, I wonder if I'd like mine better with a pieced star?  I feel pretty ho-hum about the block as it is.  Maybe it's the lack of the pink/Cerise hue?  But the multi-print black/white center - that part I like!

Lucky Pieces

Next up was Lucky Pieces, a block style that I've certainly never seen before.  For my quilt, I opted to work with 4 fabrics, rather than the 5 shown.  It still seems like a busy block to me in my prints, but I mostly like it.  I think it would have been nice to switch out the black pinstripe for more of the background fabric to make star points rather than the squared-off corners.  But then, I'm guessing it wouldn't be "Lucky Pieces" anymore!

another Greek Cross

I skipped block #9, the Minnesota, altogether in favor of making another Greek Cross.  This is probably my favorite block of the quilt-along.  It's totally easy and has such a modern flavor with the big, chunky cross.  I have been toying with the idea of using solid black as a background fabric and finally took the plunge here.  What do you think?  It's mighty dark...

Summer Sampler so far...

So here's what I have so far.  I see too much yellow.  Until now I hadn't realized that I want to play up the Cerise more than the yellow.  So, I'll indulge in more Kona Cerise this week.  I do like the amount of black and white I've got going on and the way I'm working with both black/white prints and solids.  I think maybe one block with more solid white would be good?  Not sure.

Oh, do you think the solid black (which is Kona Pepper) stands out too much in my new Greek Cross block?  Maybe I should make another block with more solid black instead of a block with solid white to make it mix better.  Hmm, hmm, hmmm.

One more week left of block-making and then the putting-together!
