Stitched in Color

Coalesce

Suddenly, home has a different character. It is quieter, restful, and I find myself landing more often on the sofa with this quilt. For four years now I’ve been sewing together diamonds and kites and crowns. Each stitch by hand and only when my heart desired. Progress came mostly in bursts during my travels.

But now all the blocks are sewn and the cadence has changed.

Now I feel the fullnesss of finishing coming. I am joining the rows, and it happens so fast. The paper pieces loosen from the center blocks, making the work lighter, suppler. All those intentional choices, all those lovely shapes, all those pretty moments coalesce.

Lately while I stitch I daydream about who or what the quilt will be someday. And this is new. I began the project just for love of quilt-making with no person or occasion in mind. But now that the end is in sight, I do wonder.

a quilt for my bedroom, all and completely mine, thus newly free to transform?

a wedding gift for Aria, who became engaged last December?

a gesture of commitment and love if things prove themselves?

I will keep dreaming awhile longer. If I need more time to discover, I can hand quilt it! That could give us another few years to enjoy and discover.
