Morning Walk for Easter

Early this month I suggested to Aria that we go Easter dress shopping together, just she and I.  She is 10 years old now, and I recall really enjoying shopping for a special dress at that age.  Her response was adamant and endearing, "No, mama, I really want you to make me my Easter dress!  Your dresses are the nicest."  Well that settled it.  NICU-be-darned, I'm making her an Easter dress.

Have you seen Leah Duncan's newest collection, Morning Walk?  It's just arriving in stores and it's as lovely as her Meadow collection for sure.  I fell in love straight away with a light, airy print called Aura Wispy Daybreak that screamed "Easter Dress".  Fortunately Aria agreed and off I went to Fat Quarter Shop to order fabric.

I decided to try two options for the contrast sash because it was so hard to tell online what would look best with the Aura Wispy.  I had been leaning towards the blue print, but..

Morning Walk for Easter

In person the yellow version is way, way better!  Hopefully I'll be able to start cutting the dress this weekend.

NICU baby Eleni

I thought you might like a little update on Eleni.  Since we last talked she has been stable in the NICU and seems to move her body more and more each day.  However, her sucking has not progressed.  Sad face.  In order to be able to take her home, Eleni had a surgery last Monday for a stomach feeding tube.  It's such a strange thing to feed a baby through a tube into her stomach, but it means we can enjoy her sweet face sans any tubes now.  And, most importantly, it means she'll be able to eat safely at home while we continue to hope she learns to suck or at least swallow.

Eleni is recovering well from the surgery with no need for oxygen assistance or any medicines.  We were actually all set up for a Sunday discharge (this weekend!), but I just found out moments ago that it may be delayed due to some logistics.  Oh, I can't wait to take this baby home!  Crossing fingers and toes things are ironed out in time.  Or, if not Sunday, then really soon thereafter!

Have a great weekend, friends!  I hope to get some sewing in too.

  8. I know the joy - & relief! - of finally getting to bring your baby home. I'm so happy for you that the day is almost here! And she's just beautiful (but you already knew that. 😉)! I think Aria's dress is going to be lovely on her, so fresh & airy.

Our little guy was born last night, he is a week early (induced to avoid the medical problems we've had with the other 7 children. And it worked!), & we are both doing well. ☺

  10. I love the fabrics you chose for the dress, I'm sure it will be lovely.

Glad to hear Eleni may be coming home soon. If you haven't already, you may want to check out the Feeding Tube Awareness Foundation - here's a link to their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/FeedingTubeAwareness?pnref=lhc

A friend of mine is really involved in the org and there is a lot of support for parents through the FB group.

Best wishes to all your family.

  13. So glad to hear you will have your little one home with you soon. When my granddaughter was in the NICU (she had a TEF-tracheoesophageal fistula-esophagoues not attached to stomach) they gave her a pacifier. Told us to let her us it when she was being feed thru the stomache tube. She used it all the time. They said she would need speech theraphy etc to help her since she was so slow in the swallow/suck actions. The pacifier helped her tremendously. She never did have to have therapy. God works miracles each and every second. May God bless you and your little one greatly.

  20. I love the color combo for the dress. Aria will look beautiful in it.

My daughter was hospitalized for over a month when she was 12 months old. We ended up leaving the hospital with a feeding tube. It was such a relief to have her home, even with the tube. Enjoy these precious days. Eleni is so lovely. Many blessings on you all.

I recently won a fat quarter bundle of Folk Song. I have decided that your Colorbrick pattern would be lovely in this fabric. I can't wait to get started this afternoon. Thanks for being a constant source of creative inspiration.

  21. Oh, Rachel! Eleni is just gorgeous! I continue to pray for healing for your precious girl, and I hope she comes home very soon!
I love your fabric choices for Aria's dress ~ it will be lovely, I'm sure! Goodness, I've got to get going on MY girls' Easter outfits! They have beautiful calf-length tulle skirts that they wore as flower girls a few weeks ago, and I'm thinking maybe I will just make each of them a spring-colored leotard type top to wear with them, and call it done.
    Blessings ~ Tracy

  32. Rosemary B here:
She is the cutest little thing. Oh myyyyy. I know it will be good to have her home.
You will see such a change. These are the sounds and senses she was used to a few weeks ago.
Eleni needs her mommy and her sister and brother and daddy. It is going to be good. the g tube is easy, just keep it clean. No worries. If she ever grabs it and pulls it out, no worry, it is just held by a small air bubble. If it does get snipped and deflates and comes out, no worries there either. I am used to those, Had a lot of patients with them back in days of olden. Removed a few myself actually.
I love you Rachel. I am so glad that you are fitting in all of the things you need and want to do.
God is blessing all of you.
I love the fabrics. I am looking forward to seeing Aria in her beautiful dress

  52. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... beautiful girl <3 (to paraphrase John Lennon). Thank you for sharing your precious pictures of your gorgeous Miss Eleni. Whatever life holds, she is blessed to have been born into your family, and vice versa, and I know you will make everything the very best you can for her. Life's not a race, it's a journey, and if we always fretted about the destination we would miss the beauty of the passing scenery.

  60. I hope you get Eleni home soon. My goddaughter has had a feeding tube since she was a newborn (she'll be 5 years old next month). It has its challenges, but she'll be home with you, and that is what is important. God bless.

  61. Hooray for Eleni coming home. The fabric for your daughter is beautiful. I loved seeing Easter dresses for my daughter too. Some of the fabric scraps are still in my stash.

  62. Wow, that dress will be gorgeous! I can see why she wanted you to make it for her.

My cousin, who has Down's Syndrome, had a feeding tube for years, eventually learning to swallow when in his late teens. It's so wonderful to read of Eleni's progress, and I can only imagine how wonderful it will be when you can finally bring her home.

  65. So precious that she wanted you to make her a dress. When I was little, we wanted store-bought. Of course the Leah Duncan fabric is way more beautiful than the yellow polyester my mom used for me. :-) Thanks for sharing a pic of beautiful Eleni! Can't wait to hear news of you cuddling her at home.

  68. You are such a wonderful mom! I'm sure Aria needed some 'mommy' time. It can be hard to balance the needs of multiple children, and especially difficult to balance the needs of an infant needing lots of attention. I'm so happy to see Eleni's sweet face and to see the beautiful fabric chosen for Aria's dress. My husband had a feeding tube during the last 6 months of his life. I was amazed at how easy it was to take care of and use. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Elli
