Unabashedly YELLOW {a mosaic contest}

Slow down a minute, my friend, and ponder with me in color.

What is cheerful?  What is bold?  What is strong, yet simple; never cold?  What pop of color always makes a room shine?  What hue is a very, very favorite of mine?

Yellow.  Unabashedly, yellow.  So far from dull.

yellow earthy
entry, hello sign, design seeds color palette, meadow

Dream with me a dream of yellow... a pop, a bucketful, a hint, a meadow.  Find yellow close to earth in warm taupe, rich brown, fresh green, summer peach.  Hello, yellow!  Center stage, as always.

yellow classic
bird, blocks, lemons, building

A classic hue, primary at its best.  Pairs well with red, with blue (and all the rest).  Reserve yourself to stately schemes, add lots of neutrals.  Set sail, safe and at ease.

yellow modern
crates, dress, desk, bathroom, doors

or, OR... punch it up with gray like ice.  Mix in modern shapes, all the colors, everything you like!  Yellow layers, fearless of finding itself lost.  Irresistibly fun, dramatic, even.  However can you go wrong?

yellow charming
flowers, paint, umbrellas, skirt, quilt

Which is why I so love yellow, actually - you can. not. go. wrong. It mixes well with ANYTHING.  It's too confident to be dissuaded by paltry matters of color theory.  And then... another day, it comes on sweetly, with a charming note that belies its strength.

Yellow.  Unabashedly, yellow.  My most versatile friend.

I invite you to join us for a Fabric Mosaic contest sponsored by Fabric Spot.

Carefully craft your mosaic of 12 fabrics from among the offerings at Fabric Spot. Choose fabrics to express your interpretation of Unabashedly Yellow.  Your collection of fabrics can colorful, subdued, fairly neutral, incorporate solids or prints or both.  Just make sure to include yellow in a way that makes a presence.

Once you have chosen your fabrics, the free Mosaic Maker tool makes it a snap to create a mosaic by copy and pasting image url's from Fabric Spot.  To find url's first go to the item page, then right click on the image you want and choose "copy image URL".

To enter the contest, add your mosaic image to our collection here.  If it suits you, link to a blog post explaining your choices - that helps us spread the word about our contest.  But no blog post is required (you can put your image url in the url space).  Anyone can enter, anywhere in the world.

Add your mosaic by midnight July 10th, eastern time.  You can make up to 2 mosaics! On Friday the 11th, I'll open voting. We'll have two winners! The 2 Top Mosaics will earn a complete fat quarter set of their mosaic fabrics!!! Winners announced July 14th.  Enjoy!

  1. This is hands down my favorite color -- and so underappreciated! I can't tell you the number of times I've heard someone say "I hate yellow." Thank you for bringing the spotlight onto yellow. :D Now hopefully I'll remember to enter the contest.

    1. Obviously, I'm with you in loving yellow! When I was a kid I used to say that yellow reminded me of the hospital. Not sure where that came from, but it stuck with me for a long time and I was "against" yellow. Glad that's past!

  2. Oh, I love that first dress. Would that I could ever wear something like that!! And the Flicker! I had no idea the underside of their tails were yellow. Thanks for a beautiful start to my morning.

  5. Yellow is my favourite colour - it's so happy! I have so much of it in my stash, too, because I inherited my mum's fabrics and yellow is her favourite colour too. It can be difficult to find the right yellows though - butter and banana shades are the best, and if you want to go darker you have to go for gold so as to avoid the muddier yellows which turn brown all too quickly. Once you have the right sunshiney mix, it's just like adding happiness to whatever you're making.
I should make a yellow quilt. Like now. Hmm.

    1. Me too! Yellow is the color I run out of most often. I think it's a combo of not finding/buying enough of it and using it with everything!

  7. Hi Rachel. I always enjoy your color mosaic posts. So fun to see all the images and your thoughts on the color are inspiring. How do you create the photo groupings and where do the images come from?

    1. Thanks, Anne! The photos are most always sourced on Pinterest. If you follow the links under each photo grouping, you can visit each picture and click on it for more information, if available. I make the photo collages in Photoshop. Most every time themes develop as I go about finding images that touch me.

  8. Hi Rachel - thanks for the contest. I had a great time choosing fabric for this. Do you know why my mosaic shows up out of focus though? I'm no.37.

    Thanks!

    1. I'm not sure. It could be that you uploaded/saved a small file size?

  9. Random thought- have you ever seen Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn? This post reminds me of my favorite part of that movie "Think Pink!" (if you have no idea what I am talking about, run, don't walk, to get the dvd)

  12. I've never used the Mosiac maker tool before - it's brilliant, I'm thinking it'll come in handy when trying to decide what fabrics work together for patchwork and quilting projects! Thanks for introducing it to me, and thanks for the great competition - I love creative competitions!
