kitty at the Courthouse

a Paper Piecing mess!

I am a baaaaad girl, because I've only just now mailed my *January* blocks for Love Circle at do. Good Stitches.  January definitely got away from me (Chai Rose Ikat quilt's don't make themselves) so I've been playing catch up lately, and it feels GOOD.

Ara Jane asked for Courthouse Steps in cool colors.  Trying to balance out the already-made blocks in our bee's photo pool, I aimed for a cool purple block and a gray block.  Both were definitely a stretch! I hardly own any cool purple and somehow also don't buy dark gray?   Weird.  I usually make my do. Good bee blocks solely from scraps, but for these babies I pulled out anything I could muster.  Good thing I had just received some Botanics (YAY, more on that later!!) because it had some helpful dark grays.

Courthouse Steps for Ara Jane

To keep things tidy, I paper pieced.  And guess whose pattern I used?  None other than Daisy's at Ants to Sugar, who actually studied paper piecing with me in Penny Sampler class last year!!!  How cool is that?  Now she's making patterns.  Awesome!

Paper Piecing with kitty

Strings always make such a mess!  And this cat.  Ok, this cat has a HUGE thing for my 2 work chairs.  He's hilarious.   He has to be in one, so if I push him off a chair (because I need to sew, darn it), he immediately goes to the other.  And you have to push or fully pick him up, folks.  This cat will not take a hint!

Last week I returned from getting lunch to find him curled up on the quilt on my computer chair. I pushed him off and started wrapping myself up in the quilt to sit down to work.  He took the opportunity of that slight pause to settle right back into the computer chair, all innocent-like and serene.  Really?

Anyways, I love him and he keeps my chairs warm for me.  Ha!  And here are those blocks.  Off to Ara Jane at last.

  3. beautiful blocks Rachel. Love how your kitty keeps you company. So sweet (and sometimes slightly annoying, I know. Our cat sits on my sewing all the time and does not take a hint either :))

  4. Your blocks turned out great! Really love that gray one. Going to have to grab this pattern from antstosugar. Our cats must carry the same don't-get-the-hint gene! and it's just so darned cute. I do think they get the hint completely though and that they're just messing with us. :)

  5. Rachel, Please, Please be careful with the cat in the sewing room. I had a cat that loved being in the middle of all the quilting going on and would love to play and steal fabric and thread. Didn't know she managed to eat some thread until it was to late, as it had wrapped around her stomach and she had to be put down. Just a friendly reminder that sometimes cats play things shouldn't be play things. :)

  8. These are beautiful blocks! I know what you mean with the kitty! Mine likes to sit on my current quilting project (currently your Saw Tooth Stars :) ) while I am straight line quilting it! Like while the quilt is moving through the machine! Crazy animals! Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Oh, my, while quilting! That IS crazy. I guess kitty can tell that it's already a good quilt!

  9. My two female cats steal my work chair every chance they get. I can pick a cat up out of the chair and put her down on the floor and by the time I've turned around and started to sit, she's right back in the chair. More than once, these gals have been sat on. But they keep doing it. :)

  10. That same cat lives in my hose. I even put another chair in the sewing room and he wants mine.

  11. I'm so excited you liked the template! I learned SO MUCH from your class. I don't have any cats in chairs in my sewing space, and I'm lucky that my black lab is content to watch me sew from her bed. Furry sewing company is the best!

  14. LOL! Such a sneaky kitty! I've got one, too. I can get up from my chair, walk across the room for something and in the 15 seconds my back was turned there's my Daisy all settled on my chair like she's been there for hours. And she gets so offended when I have to push her off! Love the blocks. Court house steps are So Much Fun done in modern prints.

  16. I love those blocks- purples make up a large part of my stash... it's the earth tones that get me every time! My kitty (Wally) leaves me be while I'm sewing, but will climb directly onto my laptop, iPad, or Kindle while I am using them- and shove himself right back on after being booted.

  18. Blocks turned out great. Love the colours. My cat does exactly the same thing and after kicking her off for what seemed the hundredth time ( she is huge and starts to bite when she's had enough....scary) I went and got the identical computer chair from the other room and just wheeled her aside still curled up on my chair and I used the other one! The kids thought it was hilarious. :) The dogs were jealous!

  19. The blocks turned out lovely! So know the feeling with the cats. One is always with me, and she used to do the same thing as yours. We compromised. She loves feather pillows and fleece pillowcases. We both have been happy ever since...lol.
