It started with Anthropologie's Oh To Dream quilt, pinned long ago with the phrase "softly against black." This (for me) unusual palette contrasts a soft, playful aesthetic with splashes of darker hues.

Today I've spent awhile wondering among soft halls, where glints of color seam to retreat into the dark edge of the night. I see dreamy pinks. Mysterious blues. Romantic purples. But most any color will do, tempered... softly, softly by feathered grays and dusky blacks.
I invite you to join us for a Fabric Mosaic contest sponsored by my friend Alice of Fresh Modern Fabric.
Carefully craft your mosaic of 12 fabrics from among the offerings at Fresh Modern Fabric. Choose fabrics to express your interpretation of Softly Against Black. Your collection of fabrics can be pretty, cute, dramatic, or running in the direction of Halloween.
Once you have your fabrics, the free Mosaic Maker tool makes it a snap to create a mosaic by copy and pasting image url's from Fresh Modern Fabric.
To enter the contest, add your mosaic image to our collection here. If it suits you, link to a blog post explaining your choices - that helps us spread the word about our contest. But no blog post is required (you can put your image url in the url space). Anyone can enter, anywhere in the world.
Add your mosaic by midnight September 20th. You can make up to 3 mosaics! On Friday the 21st, I'll open voting. We'll have two winners! The 2 Top Mosaics will earn a complete fat quarter set of their mosaic fabrics!!! Plus, Fresh Modern Fabric will create a bundle like yours available for others to buy. Winners announced September 24th. Enjoy!

What a fun contest! I'm gonna get right on this.

ReplyDeleteThis is very fun. Yet anotehr reason to look through fabric. I've ordered from Fresh Modern Fabric before and they're great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun contest and already 86 mosaics are in! It is so much fun to through fabrics and match a few together. Thanks for hosting this contest!
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Fresh Modern has some great fabrics and the phrase, "softly against black" feels so lush. Is that your phrase, or did it come from something else? Just curious.
I tried to make a mosaic, but I am not able to see it on their website, although it shows I've created one. I'm on a mac- any ideas for me? (I know I'm too late for the contest, but it seems like a neat tool)
The other thing I wanted to say is that I would love to see some sort of ongoing prompt such as this. I selected fabrics last night that I never would have put together, nor would I have really been drawn to the palette. But seeing your mosaic and having the direction of picking fabrics based on this palette and idea was awesome! Very stretching creatively! I want to buy my own selection and make something now! So, I'd love to see you host some sort of creative exploration assignment like this on an ongoing basis. Thanks!
Ingrid, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And, I'm encouraged that you'd like me to do this more often =). Yes, the phrase was mine. You know, after you use Mosaic Maker you'd have to save the picture to your computer, then publish it online to a blog post or load it into any online picture service like Flickr or Picasa or anything. Then you would reference that posted photo for the mosaic. Hope that helps!
DeleteLovely phrase, Rachel! Thanks for the suggestion on the mosaic- I'll try it and see how I do!
