Poppy covered journal

What?!?  Another journal cover?  Perhaps it is an annual affliction, because I do believe the first series began about this time last year.  Alas.

Poppy journal cover

The Poppy cover allowed me to test some applique techniques for Handstitched Class.  There are oh-so-many ways to applique and then even more options for hand sewing the prepared shapes.  I believe I have everything sorted out now for the actual Handstitched project (which will be a pillow), except that I'm not sure I like the look of the white blanket stitching around the white edge of the flower.  Maybe a blind stitch or running stitch instead?

I used a few large Loulouthi (Summer Totem in Tart and also here) scraps in the making.  This riot of bright colors feels so very "now".  Extra little scraps filled in the blanks to finish her off.

I just can't get enough of Anna Maria Horner's big, bold blossoms.

Sleeping Bag Tutorial

Let's see... I also might mention that I'm a finalist in Jennifer's Summer Sewing Contest.  Should you care to vote, you'll find it's a tough cookie.  Lot's of gorgeous things!  I entered Liam's sleeping bag into the home decor category - what a laugh!  But, Jennifer and I figured that was a reasonable place for it, since there wasn't a category for "immensely useful things".  Congrats to all the finalists, whom I've seen popping by here.  And thanks to those who've visited!

  3. I voted for Liam's sleeping bag and you are SO right -- there are an amazing amount of wonderful items in each category!

I do love your journals and don't mind seeing each new one that you come up with! I wouldn't mind making one for each of the kids for the new school year. And, I also think these would be something great for you to sell if you still plan on doing that craft fair!

    See you soon, friend!! :)

  9. I adore hand appliqueing...I just don't really know why. How about a contrasting thread for the white of the flower so it pops out?

I think it is lovely either way! I love journal covers, but haven't made one in years!

  11. Just discovered your blog - love your journal over. I agree with Heidi (above) about the contrast thread on the white - I would choose a colour to match one in the material/s you have used.

  12. Journal is super cute! Plus, I love that I got to vote for your sleeping bag project. I want to make them for my nieces who are visiting next year from Europe. This will be their first time to America and this sleeping bag would make a wonderful "Welcome to America" present!

  13. I would echo the contrasting thread on the white - maybe a poppy color like red? And I wonder what you do with all the journals. Are they gifts?

  17. I like the contrast of the white blanket stitch where it meets the rust colored petals, but I see what you mean about the white on white. A different stitch maybe, but I also like a PP comment about a contrasting color on the white :)

  18. Your creative juices are overflowing right onto my computer. I desperately want to make a journal cover. I love the flower design and personally would use a contrasting color on the white. However, whatever you decide will be super.
