Happy Wednesday to you! How bouts a giveaway?
Hurray, it's Denyse Schmidt's new book! The good folks at Freespirit sent a copy for me and a copy for you, so here's your chance to win this newly released hardcover. Ooooooooh! Aaaah!
But first, a little tour.
Denyse Schmidt: Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration is seriously all about quilts. Check out the table of contents. Yep, quilters take note.
The quilts showcased range from a few simple versions appropriate for new quilters, like these two above...
to some pretty complex creations. Though, a lot of the complex quilts are created via applique, which is a great shortcut when working with tricky, curved shapes. This quilt, which carries both the names Tobacco Leaf and Pickle Dish, is a challenge that appeals to me. I've seen some really pretty renditions, but didn't think it was something I would want to do until I realized Denyse is showing it as an applique quilt. Seems like that approach would really simplify things.
Denyse introduces each of the 20 quilts with a fascinating discussion of its historical roots and development over time. Ok, my husband would crack up at that statement, but I truly did find each intro fascinating. Pinky swear.
For the most part, Denyse sticks to a muted, reserved palette that doesn't really call out to my color-loving soul. But here and there she adds interesting flashes of color like these errant red and blue half square triangles on her Ocean Waves quilt.
Besides the quilts, there is a very comprehensive section on quilt-making basics and beyond-basics. It's one of the better ones I've seen and makes a lot of sense for a book dedicated to quilt patterns. Denyse Schmidt fans will also enjoy the lengthy book introduction, where Denyse shares personally about her quilting on pages adorned with photos of her studio - so Pretty!
