Early Registration Opens Today!

There's a lot going on this week... and I'm ready!

Today registration opens at my shop for Curves Class at Stitched in Color!  Class begins February 1st  Oooh, let me tell you all about it!

"In the past you may have been intimidated by tight little curved seams, even downright petrified by curvy quilt blocks and more than a little skeptical that a curvy outlook could be in your stitchy future.   That all ends now.  No longer shall ye be limited to the straight edge.  No longer shall ye look with fear upon that which inspires you..."

Yep, that still sums it up!   As a quilter it's easy to get oh-so-comfortable with straight line sewing (which is golden!) that you believe the naughty little voice that whispers "curves are too hard."  They're not!  I promise!  Let me hold your hand through this 5-week course which caters to both the beginner and intermediate curves sewist.  Weeks 1-4 we'll cover Basic Curves, Improv Curves, Precise Curves and Advanced Improv Curves with full, detailed photo tutorials and many downloadable templates. Each week you can choose from 3 very different projects for one that really fits your experience and interests.  Week 5 we'll celebrate with full on quilts.  Yes!

Here's a bit more detail on what we'll cover each week with a project preview...

Scallop Bunting Project

Week 1:  Basic Curves - Truly, really basic.  So basic that you beginners are most welcome to join in.  If you've sewn 3 or so projects (of any kind) you should have the basic sewing know-how to get a ton out of this class!  And for those of you that are already comfy with the most simple curved sewing, I do have a "challenge" level project that first week to keep you on your toes.

Rainbow Road project

Week 2:  Basic Improv Curves - Because this stuff needn't be hard.  By the time you finish this week I think you'll be seeing a whole new world of curvy possibilities. All three of these projects are super fun to make.  It's going to be hard to choose - you'll see!  Yes, your enthusiasm is building and your confidence is running high so we'll continue on to...

Scallop Quilt project

Week 3:  Precise Curves - Let's tackle them head on.  We'll start off with that curvy classic - the drunkard's path - and then move on to a mod curved block of my own creation.  There's a fancy challenge project this week too.  If you go that route, you'll know you can sew any curve darn well with precision.

Mod Bud Journal Project

Week 4:  Advanced Improv Curves - Yes, I'm partial to improv piecing. It's really fun and funky and makes for such an original creation.  We'll learn some new techniques this week and what you can and cannot do with improv cutting.  (Because knowing what you cannot do can really save some fabric, let me tell you...)

Week 5:  Curvy Quilts - It's time to create your masterpiece!  The class will include detailed tutorials for two quilt designs, with links to my free tutorials for finishing your quilt (ie. basting, quilting, binding) at your leisure.  No sneak peaks on this one because the reveal is my present to you for your hard work the first few weeks!

Choose your class!  On February 1st class begins on three distinct private blogs where I can answer questions in the comments.  The super affordable Curves Class includes everything you're used to seeing from me in the way of detailed, step-by-step picture-packed tutorials and access to all projects at $35/$45.  Curves Class {Premium} adds extra helpful (and time-intensive) features like videos and a PDF eBook of the course (delivered in April) at $55/$65.  And then there is a smaller, more exclusive Curves Camp for folks that want it all, plus lots of interaction, more of a community feeling and the give and take encouragement you'd experience in a real in-person class.   Curves Camp, will be capped at 20 students (er, campers) at $75/$85.  We'll get to know each other via weekly live chats and you'll earn "merit badges" for completed class projects.  Yep, it's corny, and I love it!  If you earn 5 merit badges (one from each week of class) for projects completed by March 31st, I'll be sending you a little something handmade by me as a souvenir of Curves Camp.  I hope I get to make all 20! ***UPDATE***  Curves Camp sold out.  Thanks, friends!!!

Class runs Feb 1st through March 8th.  Your access to the blog will remain open through April 30th, during which time I will continue answering questions.  After April 30th the blog will be closed and you will no longer be able to login.  This provides much-need motivation for us to get everything we can out of the class in real time, rather than leaving it open ended for "someday."

FYI, I do not currently plan to sale the eBook separately in order to protect the value of this class.  I may, however, sell a few individual patterns separately.

I hope that every single one of you who are interested in learning to sew curves will find a place that meets your needs and your budget.  Registration also includes access to purchase Christina's Retro Flowers pattern at 50% off!

So, Ta Da!  Please join in.  We're going to have a blast!

  2. I'm so impressed with the way you have structured this class - it looks wonderful, with something for everyone!

When you first announced that you were planning to have this class I was sure I would not participate (even though I thought it was a great idea) as I already have a lot on my plate, but you have made it VERY tempting!

  3. I just signed up for the Basic. I have so many other things going that's what I can handle.

You've done a GREAT job getting ready in a short time. I'm very impressed.

Plus, I'm really glad I haven't already ordered that pattern. :)

  5. Oh my goodness! I literally laughed out loud when I saw your Rainbow Road...I have something almost identical sketched out in my notebook! ha ha! Great minds! It was the first thing I thought of at that improv class at the Sewing Summit, but haven't had time to try to make it. So you know what that means...time to take your class and cheat! LOL You are doing a wonderful job with planning and laying this out -- I am excited for this year for you and moving forward with more of your dreams!

  21. I don't have time to take the class this year, so I hope this is a huge success so you offer it again!!! I'd LOVE to do the camp, but I'm finishing up my dissertation and there's just NO way I'll have time. :/

Good luck with your class, it's such a great way to structure it!! I'll be looking forward to the pictures that start showing up of the projects. :D

  22. Rachel, thanks again for getting back to me so quickly on the timing of the Camping blog. Being in Hawaii it was important to know that it would be sometime in the late PM EST.

I've signed up and I'm excited to learn about the Curves, something I've avoided in my quilts. Hmmm also something I've avoided on slimming down on on my body. Will be working on both in 2012. :)

  23. Best wishes to you,Rachel, as you start this new venture. I know it will be a big success! I just started a circle quilt last night for my parents!

  24. Signed up for the premium class -- woo hoo! Looks like fun. I'm not a curves novice (have made several curved quilts) but am excited to try out some of this improv curve piecing.

Not sure if it matters but Paypal also froze for me after I paid and I wasn't able to get back to the site. Hope the sign up went through ok.

  25. Cindy - Actually, I did not receive a payment/purchase from your email address. I apologize - it must not have gone through. Please double check that your Paypal account does not show any activity and then re-purchase your class. So sorry for the trouble!

Everyone - I am so blessed by your response to this class! You will receive an email invitation to the class tonight if your registration went through. If you do not receive that invitation, please check your Paypal account to see if you were actually charged. If you were, please email me your purchasing email address and I will straighten things out asap!

  26. Hi Rachel

I'm having a hard time deciding which class to go for, I want more than the basics. What time are you planning the live chat in Camp (being in Sydney, Australia I want to make sure it's not at 4am my time). Are there even any places left in camp?

    dxx

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dolores - Yes, there are 5 places left in the camp =). When it is full, I will mark it "sold out". I'm tentatively planning the chats for Thursday nights at 9pm EST, but I'll be taking feedback from campers about if that suits the group. So far it seems to suit. Thanks for asking!

Also, wanted to let everyone know that all who said Paypal "froze up" were actually properly registered. So, no glitches yet =)

  29. Just signed up for the basic class and, let me tell you, I am super excited! :) February can't come soon enough! Maybe it will give me some time to clean up my sewing room...so excited!

  30. Just signed up for the camp and I hope I can keep up and make the chats. We are on Mountain Time so my kids may be running amok during them.

I am really excited. I am solo parenting and my crafting social life is limited because I can't get out in the evenings. This will bring the social life to me!

  31. I just signed up for the premium class - in part because I know I am going to want an ebook of all of this when it's over, and in part because I think you deserve the extra money for this. I can already tell how much work you have put into this. I can't wait to get started!

    ReplyDelete
  32. i will lend my voice here too...i signed up for the basic class and i am very excited to start! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. just signed up, I bought Christine's retro flowers pattern recently so even if this course just ensures I make a good job of that I'll be happy. Pity I didn't wait and get the discount!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ahhh.....I hope you'll do this again in the spring as the class play I'm directing is keeping me from signing up for anything else...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just signed on as a camper! Woo hoo! So excited to join you Rachel! Your blog was one of my inspirations for learning how to sew last year and now I can't wait to start mastering curves!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Your projects are just lovely; great job and good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm so excited for you! Camp is already sold out?? Awesome! You're off to an amazing start this year, Rachel!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. oh darn, I wanted Curves Camp ~ are you going to be doing it again any time soon?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry, Ella. I don't expect to teach the Curves Classes again "soon". At most it will be an annual thing, but I actually doubt it will be that often. I'll enjoy developing new classes!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Okay Rachel, I'm a moron and have never done anything like this before. If I do the Curves Class Premium, I'll get the PDF eBook in April to keep forever? And the PDF book is a tutorial of the projects? AND...what if I can't get all the projects done in time (my 1 y/o needs surgery in a month)?? That's my main concern. I'm slow, but I want to learn, and that scallop quilt is calling my name so urgently :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jenn - Yes, the Premium class comes with the PDF eBook for you to keep forever. The book will be ready late April, which works out since the class blog stays open through April 30th. I'd like to wrap up answering questions when the blog closes, but you can always contact me by email or through the contact button at StitchedinColor. I'm always here to help =)

  42. Alright, it's done :) Umm, though I couldn't find where to buy the Retro Flowers pattern. I know, I know, I'm difficult. And you're probably thinking about what you just got yourself into, but I promise, I won't bug you much after this :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. No problem! The link to buy Christina's pattern is going out in a welcome email this week (maybe tomorrow). Thanks for joining in, Jenn!

  44. This sounds like fun, but I hesitate to sign-up because I guess I still don't fully grasp what is going to be covered...
I ordered and received a drunkards path template for Christmas and tried it out...it doesn't seem to hard. May I ask you to 'sell' your class just a little more. $35 seems like a good price for a class, I guess I'd just like to know what I'm buying.
Also, if I do the basic class, am I able to save/print the tutorials from the blog for future use since we don't get the book?
I hope this doesn't sound rude or snotty...it is not intended to be.
    I love your blog! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Amanda- - I think those are fair questions! First off, yes you are welcome to save or print the materials from the class however you like. So, you really could make your own eBook. I'm just selling the work done for you with formatting, templates, etc. I don't mind if you'd rather save the money and do it yourself =) Of course with the premium level you also get video tutorials, which make learning faster and more enjoyable, I'd think.

As for the class, it's difficult to show or describe what I'll be teaching without actually giving it all away. I have decided not to reveal all the projects precisely because I feel the designs/ideas are part of what I'm selling. If you find sewing curves to be going well already and don't need the motivation of a class and new patterns, it could honestly not be for you. And, I mean that in the kindest way. I feel my role is to inspire, motivate and enable.

I will be revealing a few more of the projects in the class as the month continues. But, everything I could say to describe the class I feel I've already said.

    Blessings!

  46. I just signed up for the class - I'm very excited about it. I finish my PhD this February so this is the perfect time for me to learn some new sewing skills! This course is a great idea!

  47. I just got signed up for the premium curves class...so anxious!
Thanks, Rachel (my daughters' name is Rachel)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Since the class is sold out, will you please offer this class again later this year? Sounds interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't foresee offering any versions of the class again this year. But, maybe in the years to come! Keep in mind that Curves Class and Curves Class {Premium} are still available. =)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just signed up for the Premium class! Looking forward to it so I can learn how to utilize all the Drunkard's Path fabric I liberated from my grandmother's stash!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would love to partake but unfortunately the timetable is absolutely impossible for me to actually sew things. All of February is totally out of bounds for me. :(
