Summer Sampler Update!

Week 3 blocks

Here are my Week 3 blocks for the Summer Sampler Series. I know that many of you are playing along because I've been seeing your blocks at the Flickr group!

6-pointed Star

The first block last week was this 6-pointed star.  Kate showed versions with and without pieced star points.  In retrospect, I wonder if I'd like mine better with a pieced star?  I feel pretty ho-hum about the block as it is.  Maybe it's the lack of the pink/Cerise hue?  But the multi-print black/white center - that part I like!

Lucky Pieces

Next up was Lucky Pieces, a block style that I've certainly never seen before.  For my quilt, I opted to work with 4 fabrics, rather than the 5 shown.  It still seems like a busy block to me in my prints, but I mostly like it.  I think it would have been nice to switch out the black pinstripe for more of the background fabric to make star points rather than the squared-off corners.  But then, I'm guessing it wouldn't be "Lucky Pieces" anymore!

another Greek Cross

I skipped block #9, the Minnesota, altogether in favor of making another Greek Cross.  This is probably my favorite block of the quilt-along.  It's totally easy and has such a modern flavor with the big, chunky cross.  I have been toying with the idea of using solid black as a background fabric and finally took the plunge here.  What do you think?  It's mighty dark...

Summer Sampler so far...

So here's what I have so far.  I see too much yellow.  Until now I hadn't realized that I want to play up the Cerise more than the yellow.  So, I'll indulge in more Kona Cerise this week.  I do like the amount of black and white I've got going on and the way I'm working with both black/white prints and solids.  I think maybe one block with more solid white would be good?  Not sure.

Oh, do you think the solid black (which is Kona Pepper) stands out too much in my new Greek Cross block?  Maybe I should make another block with more solid black instead of a block with solid white to make it mix better.  Hmm, hmm, hmmm.

One more week left of block-making and then the putting-together!

  1. I love your color palette for this quilt! I think the pepper will look great once the quilt is all finished, just another dimension of color!

  3. Beautiful!!! I love all of them!

  4. I like the black a lot. I think if the next few blocks you do are predominately that purple/pink color with a few more black accents, it's going to tie together wonderfully.

  5. I love the way you changed the Lucky Pieces block - genius! All of them are beautiful so far!

  6. It looks great! I think if you switched the placement of the first 2 blocks in the third row, the yellow would be spread out more and you suddenly might not think there is too much. Can't go wrong with getting more Kona Cerise though, it's one of my all time favorites!

  7. I absolutely love the black background, Rachel! That was the first thing I noticed in your pictures and I think it really adds depth to your quilt. They all look great together!

  8. Ditto the above!!! Not too much yellow and definitely keep the black! These colors really work for me, not sure where I'd put such a quilt though, lol. Maybe a dining room wall hanging. My walls are about the color of your contact button(the bright lime green).

  13. I think the blocks look wonderful so far. Your Sampler quilt is going to be beautiful! I really love the yellow/black/white star block. Even though there is no cerise, it totally works. I especially love the Lucky Pieces block. The fabrics you chose are perfect together.

  16. I really like the dark block, but it does stand out. I think the addition of some darker colors in the next blocks you make will make a big difference. Maybe spreading them out throughout the quilt too? I'm sure you were already going to do that, haha

  18. Great piecing! The black is strong but with more cerise everything will balance. It is going to look great with awesome contrast!

  20. Looking great Rachel! I think you're spot on, more Cerise and a bit more of the blacks to balance it all out. The placement of the central one (not sure of name, black pinstripe background)looks great there, seems to belong in the middle, ties in the others around it.

Can I ask what print the black and white one is you used as the background for 'Lucky Pieces'? The swirly 'Celtic like' one. It's gorgeous!

  22. I think that the black background looks great but you might need another block with more black.

  23. Thanksfor your thoughts on the colors and layout! Lucy, I don't know the fabric name for that celtic print, unfortunately. It was a local pick up over a year ago!

  24. I love the black block. But, of course I'm doing all my blocks with black background.

I've not put last week's pictures up yet, and I've now sewed a single stitch of anything since last week. Also, I've done the Minnesota block and I don't care for it all that much. I may be re-doing that one.
