Bottled Rainbows {Blue Blocks}

This post is part of a series Bottled Rainbows {ticker tape quilt along}. You can join in anytime. We're going at a leisurely pace and using up our scraps! Please see this page for links to all posts, and join us on Flickr to share your questions and work-in-progress!

I have a double-dose of color for you today - last week's block and this week's block in one tidy package.  (Courtesy of my Saturday spent sewing - yeah!)   Golly I am glad to have made it over to the cool side!

"Indigo" and "Ocean" Bottled Rainbow Blocks

So refreshing!

I have to admit, I've been pining for the blue blocks since I saw Angela's blue Bottled Rainbows.  But I had this thing about working through the color grid in an order defined by colors that touch.  Doesn't that sound crazy?  I guess I just like to see the colors as they relate to each other (oh, really, you know it's pure crazy).

"Ocean" Bottled Rainbow in Kona Pacific

This is the "Ocean" block, which belongs in the upper right corner of the Bottled Rainbow Color grid.  It's made here in Kona pacific, which is a drop-dead gorgeous blue in my humble opinion.  I was short of fabrics or scraps for this block, so I did buy a bit of one Castle Peeps print and the Eliza stripe to get the job done.

"Indigo" Bottled Rainbow in Kona Marine

And here is the "Marine" block.  She's totally my favorite of the two!

scrappy delight.

I think it's the good mixture of big and little-ish scraps. Hello, hippo!

Bottled Rainbow {love}

color happiness.

Now there are just 7 blocks left, so I am more than halfway done.  Looking forward to making my Cerise block next so that I can connect another row!  Here's what I've done so far:

my progress

What about those of you who are playing along?  How are the blocks coming?  How many do you have left?  I wonder if you've chosen a backing.  I need to get on that!

Getting started soon and are still looking for your solids?  I can point you to Marmalade Fabrics who has created a custom Bottled Rainbows bundle and a nice page for us that has all 16 recommended Kona's so that you can pick up just what you need with ease.  All colors are in stock and ready ship right away, all together.  And then the rainbow madness begins...

Until next time, sew happy!

  1. Where's the marine block go? Am I blind today?

  2. O my gosh I love the fussy cut pieces of the blue castle peeps! So cute! :)

  3. The marine block goes to the left of the pacific/ocean block. "Marine" is the name of the Kona color I used. "Indigo" is the name of the block in the color grid. Confusing, I know! Sorry =)

  4. I just finished my second block, and I'm trying to decide which color to do next. Your blue blocks look lovely! I bet it feels good to be halfway done.

  5. Two more gorgeous blocks! I love how you make every inch count- and great fabrics!

  6. I have 5 down, 11 to go! I took a break for a little while, but hope to catch up and do like 4-5 in a week! Your blocks look wonderful!

  7. I love the look of your blocks. I think getting the Castle Peeps was totally worth it.

  8. I love those two blue blocks. My daughter would be in heaven. Her favorite color is blue.

  9. Your blue blocks are beautiful - and that is saying something, because blue is my least favorite color!

I am so sad to say that I still have not started my BR quilt. I'm feeling very frustrated about this, as I ordered my Kona bundle on March 17th and have received only 4 of the 16 colors. I didn't even get an invoice so I am not totally sure which colors I have! I'm very close to canceling my order and just finding the Kona elsewhere. *sigh*
Sorry, you're not the person I should be complaining to! I just love this quilt so much, I am itching to start!

    1. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, they have a marvelous selection of Kona.

  10. I wish I had gotten mine at Marmalade! After a snafu with Whipstitch I finally tracked down all of my fabrics at 3 different shops! :) Got the last 2 today and they are glorious together! Tomorrow starts the scrap picking! BIG JOB! (better bring my scuba gear!) :)

  11. The miss-communication with Whipstitch was very unfortunate. They're supposed to be shipping out all backordered fabric this week with a little extra for those that unfortunately had to wait. I'm so sorry this happened to you two ladies! And, I know you don't actually blame me, but I'm still sorry!

  12. Those are fabulous blocks. I love the fussy cutting.

  13. Awe...I've been itching to do the warm blocks because you started on the opposite end from me! I guess we're inspiring each other.

I think that I may bring my blocks on my quilting retreat in a couple of weeks so that I can relax with the gals and create some fun blocks!

  14. I have 6 done, I think. I haven't worked on them in a couple of weeks as I'm backed up with commissions, which is a good thing, of course, but I miss my rainbows! I've had to pick up a few fabrics to fill in the blues, too. I can't believe how few blues I have! This project has really helped me see where my stash lacks.

Oh, and I love how you are working systematically through the grid. I am doing exactly the opposite: just jumping to whatever color strikes my fancy that day! Color therapy!

This is fun, thanks for leading!

  15. Here's my question!! How is that I am just now finding this????
I love this quilt. My blog partner and I have already started tracking down the Kona solids we need (most for 30% off!!) We have 4 more to get, then we are going to swap scraps and get to work!
Thanks for the quilt along. I hope I can post some pics soon!
Linked to you on our blog.

  16. These look so cute Rachel
Do you use heat and bond, then satin stitch with your musheeeen?
    I just love it.
I am on restriction starting any new projects. I have way too many in the works right now. I can't wait to see how this turns out though. It looks wowie wonderful.
I just started making myself a blouse (?) and started something for one of my favorite friends who just got dx with Crohns. She is only 27 years old!! So unfair.
    Happy Monday.
I am going to check out this project. It looks so fun
