Pieces of a Day

Yesterday, was one of those days. Not quite a good one.

Overstitched Circles - Not working for me

This is a crewel embroidery pattern from The New Crewel. I'm unhappy with my overstitch, but I think the real reason why this project is bugging me is I have no idea what I'll use it for. It feels like a baby project, but I can't imagine embroidery like this would withstand a beating as a bib or on the front of a tee. Do you have any suggestions?

Pieces of a day

More aimlessness. I pieced together some scraps from my Modern Meadow colorbrick quilt and then cut them up into these cute little squares. I'm not making coasters.  Right now I'm contemplating making them into half square triangles and then into pot holders to give to somebody, someday.  But I wonder, are pieced half square triangles a good idea?

a Fall Bunting, perhaps?

In a hopeful moment I gathered these pretties. If they are lucky, they will become a fall bunting. We'll see.

Inspired to Finish

My Alabama Chanin pincushion has been languishing untouched in a drawer. The reverse applique is complete - it only needs assembling. I thought I would machine stitch assemble it, but now I've decided to hand stitch it after all. I suppose it'll be the first thing I've made entirely by hand.  Aha, a project with a sure future!

Today is a better day already.

  1. Boy for a bad day you have some pretty beautiful things to show for it! LOL. I really like how you used all the different colorways of Modern Meadow together. I think that pieced half square triangles are a fabulous idea. I can imagine them in a star block with a solid fabric to provide contrast. You'll look like you spent hours piecing each little triangle!

And i need to try reverse applique sometime. I have yet to tackle that technique. But your's looks beautiful!!

  2. I think the only thing you would need to worry about with making those pieced squares into half square triangles is them stretching or the stitches coming out of your piecing. You may want to use the method where you sew before you cut!

  3. I think the crewel is great. Put some awesome fabrics with it and make a pillow!

  4. Dude, that was totally my day yesterday. Everything I tried I threw down with a big "ugh!" until I'd accumulated a nice pile of stuff that just refused to work for me. I exercised instead. Oh well. We all have those days, right?

  5. I've done pieced blocks like that into HST's - lots of seams, but a great effect. Natalie is right about sewing before you cut, though.

  6. I like the crewel work. I say make it into a block in a wall quilt or a pillow too. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who finds it difficult to work on something when I can't envision how it will be used.

  7. that looks beautiful Rachel! Wow, I can;t wait to see what it looks like finished.
